The empty kayak of Alfred Milà, 57, has been found during an extensive search operation to find the businessman, who disappeared on Tuesday.

An experienced kayaker and owner of Riumar, the biggest seller of kayaks and canoes in Spain, Milá was making his way from the small island of Formentera to Ibiza.

He was last seen by Asier Fernández, the director of the Formentera Sailing School, at around 2.25pm on Tuesday afternoon.

“A strong wind blew in at around 4pm,” Fernández confirmed to Spanish daily El Mundo, describing how the morning’s calm weather gave way to choppy seas and stormy conditions later in the afternoon.

The journey from Formentera to Ibiza should have taken Milà around an hour and a half, but he never made it to his destination, prompting an extensive search and rescue operation to be launched on Wednesday morning, amidst 70km/hour winds and three metre high waves.

Milá’s kayak was found around 10 miles east of Formentera but the bad conditions hampered its retrieval.

Milá’s wife, along with two of his friends, travelled to Formentera on Thursday to help in the search along the coast of the island.
